1 How often should turns occur on Fri Mar 05, 2010 3:15 pm

Trying to split this discussion off to keep things less confusing.

How often should countries be able to colonize/fight a round of war?

We have had suggestions ranging from 2 hours to once a day.

Personally I would prefer once a day. This isn't very fast paced, but it keeps the game from being a huge time sink, allowing more people to actively participate. I know I frequently get busy, but I can certainly spend at least 10 minutes a day keeping up.

This would also allow plenty of time for diplomacy and roleplaying between rounds, and in the event of war allies would have plenty of time to declare support, neutral nations would have a chance to react, and attackers and defenders would not feel pressured to make rolls immediately for fear of forfeiture. And this schedule would make it much easier to have one official map and avoid cross colonizations and other errors, along with easing the burden on the mapmaker.

I agree. With a turn per day as the standard we could really crank up the political intrigue, which is always fun. The personal messaging system is really something that we should make use of if we can. Furthermore, less turns per day would make the game easier to manage, allowing for more people to feasibly play without things getting stupidly chaotic.

We do need to set a standard for how many actions you can preform in a turn, though. I do think, whatever the number we settle on, we should compensate people who miss a turn. Perhaps give a certain number of bonus actions per turn missed, up to a preset maximum?

For example, the standard could be 2 actions per turn, and when you miss a day, you get 3 actions your next turn (but not 4 the next day if you miss that turn). Or something like that.

The rules for the game are rather simplistic, when you think about it, which lent itself well to the fast pace of 4chan, but I can see it actually getting in the way here. Sooner or later someone is going to have to declare war on someone or else the game won't go anywhere, but there's no mechanical motives for anyone to want to do that.

But I'm overthinking this last point, I think. We should play the current game until its completion, and see how it works out before we consider adding rules. Once we settle into an equilibrium we'll probably get to roleplaying, which may provide all the motive we need for our actions.

I was originally for multiple turns/day, but the two of you have convinced me that isn't really what I want. My issue is the fact that the game is going to take weeks to get past the "peaceful expansion" faze, which, for me, is the least interesting part of Nation Game. So I am totally for one turn/day, but would like the expansion ramped up from 0-3 colonies per day because I would hope to get to the interesting parts before July.

This type of game really lends itself better to this type of forum, and I am excited by the possibilities in introduces.

Arrow Slower pace.
Arrow Increased roleplaying.
Arrow Private messaging.
Arrow Possible multiple games occuring at the same time (subforums?).
Arrow Evolution of rules over time to make for better play.

Twice a day, then lowering down to once a day after the territories start to diminish, and wars begin to break out.

Any comments on the now current four a day?

I'm thinking I'll keep this until the first war breaks out, then slow the pace a bit.

I doing away with turns and just giving people a number of actions a day is the way to go. That way, people who want it to work like a turn can do all their actions at once, while those who want to take their time can do so.

And I think 4 is good for now.

There is no rule that you must take all your rolls at once. You just receive them all at once and most people use them in the same fashion.

How do you guys feel about a capital system? I don't have any ideas for what effect they could have on gameplay, but it'd be interesting to see if we could get them in eventually somehow.

Perhaps the colony in which the capital is located could somehow be more important than others?

At any rate, I'd rather not add something like this into an ongoing game. I'll wait for the next before changing it up much.

Putting another idea out there: economy. I am working on a possible system to make it work and will hopefully post it in a couple days.

Also different maps, like the suggestion of Europe, Mediterranean, and North Africa. We could even have the setting be flavored in a different era, like the Romans/Greeks/Carthage etc.

That runs the risk of getting convoluted. How do you plan to incorporate different climates? Perhaps give each territory with a score representing how economically productive the land is?

This sounds good. What time zone are we going by?

Slow the pace? Wow. Maybe a bigger map and same pace?

You're responding to an old discussion that was already resolved.

They had a different Nations Game up before the 20th, but they seem to have canceled it part way through (I wasn't really following it, so I dunno how far they got)to start the second one.

As long as this thread isn't dead anymore, what do you guys think about running separate, simultaneous games on this forum? I know it's been brought up a lot, but it seems like it wouldn't really be that hard (assuming kobo1d didn't have to look after the maps on all of them...), and would provide a way to reduce clutter on the map. We've currently got 20 nations... granted, some of them seem to have stopped playing and Diaspora is on the verge of dissolution, but it still seems like we should have more than one game.
