The rockets shook hard as they entered the Martian atmosphere.

Less than two years ago, the war escalated to Nuclear. While the first bombs were 'small', the world was poised to be engulfed in flames. It seemed as though China, with the rest of the world, would be ground to dust.
There were no safe places on the Earth any more. The only option left was mars.
"Is the rocket port intact?"
"Yes, chairman. The rocket is intact - but I cannot say the same for the city."
"That means the R-3 is no longer a priority target. China has more time to prepare."
"Chairman, the entire world will be covered in Fire and Ash. China is dead."
"No, major. The Earth is dead. Not China."

Less than 18 months ago, the launch was underway. One massive rocket, the R-3, had taken 20 years to build, and had bankrupted the economy. It was intended to be used as a first strike platform, but that opportunity had passed. 8 'smaller' rockets were bolted to the outside, hosting ramshackle living quarters and resources for 8 martian colonies.
"T minus 10, 9, 8..."
The chairman swallowed hard, hoping that the next bomb was not aimed for him - and if it was, that it would hit after the rocket was clear.
"... 7, 6, 5, 4 ..."
He calmed his nerves, and strengthened his muscles.
"... 3, 2, 1, Launch."
The main rocket fired. 20 years of China's history were poured into this rocket, as it flew into the sky. Some time passed as the Rocket climbed into the atmosphere.
...
"Detaching piggyback rockets. Dropping stage 3."
The colony rockets flew free, and started their burn, climbing clear of the R-3 as it arced towards the earth to deploy its payload. The colony rockets rolled onto their sides, entering low orbit to watch the show.
For 90 minutes, the world lit up like a christmas tree. Brightly lit cities would glow bright as the Sun for a few brief seconds, then grow darker as the Earth cooled beneath them, before finally fading to a dim red glow as the city and its people were blown to dust.
20 years of China's history had succeeded. While the "first strike" wasn't as effective as hoped, at least China had taken the world with it.
"Starting burn again in 60 seconds, strap yourselves back in."
The Earth rolled out of view as the rockets re-fired.

The journey was a long and uneventful one. Most of the crew were in a cryogenic coma to conserve oxygen. The defrost started as the R-3's piggybacked colony modules entered Martian orbit.
"Wake up, Chairman, and Welcome to Mars."
"No, my good pilot. Welcome to China."

The atmosphere rattled the rockets as they made their approach - firing the last of their fuel to slow down and coming in shallow. All 8 modules appeared to land safely - The command module forming a de-facto "Capital" for the Chinese forces.
"This is the Chairman. The very 2nd thing I want you to do is spend all available resources on linking up with the other colonies."
"Roger sir. What's the first thing?"
"Plant the flag."

The exact details are unimportant, but the following has happened:
The Chinese Command Module (and capital) landed on 291.
269, 270, 456, 291, 222, 220, 217, and 214 are the landing locations for the 8 colony pods, and China has 2g remaining.

Here's a map of the world as current, including those locations:
Map link
Note: Map link is inaccurate. It shows the Fenian territory count as 5, when they have 7.

The Soviets receive the Japanese emissary with joy, glad to see more Communists on this planet. Howeer, they must say that they have now need for oil, though they\'d be willing to trade Uranium if the Japanese have any need for it.

Emissaries are sent back to the Japanese, and to the Chinese in the south, to negotiate the establishment of a new Comintern.

((OOC: Yeah, you\'re right, the Irish do have 7 territories. I didn\'t count and just filled in all the territories, didn\'t realize they had expanded. I fixed it.))

EDIT: Just realized that map lacks China. Fixed that.
EDIT2: Crap, forgot to add China to the scoreboard. Fixed that too.

General Alexander sat in his office, reading a book left over from a warm corpse of a world. Behind him was a large window, through which Martian landscape could be seen. The Garden of Eden. His secretary buzzed his intercom.

"Sir, the head of the treasury is here to talk to you."

"Let him in."

The office door opened. A tall, nervous-looking, middle-aged man walked in, nearly knocking over a potted plant as he made his way to the general's desk.

"Sir, it appears that we are stretching the gold mighty thin. Between our recent efforts to assert ourselves in the east and paying for the upkeep of our armies, I'm afraid we're quite near the red line. The good news is that we have discovered gold to the southwest that could possibly set our economy back on the right track. However, we must capture the area and build a mine there as soon as we can gather the resources or we may have an economic crises on our hands."

"So it shall be," replied General Alexander. "You are dismissed."

"Thank you, sir."

As the head of the treasury quickly left the office, General Alexander leaned forward at his desk and pressed the intercom button.

"Mrs. Goshorn, please send in the people who planned our recent southeastern expansion. Now."

"Right away, sir."

New Nation: Republique de France
Capitol: 241 (New Versailles)
Other territories: 256, 255, 237, 242

The political tension in early 20th century France was only made worse by the space race. With nuclear war devastating Asia and the fall of Britain, Earth looked more and more like it was going to hell in a handbasket. After a federal election which produced a radical right government, the left-wing elements of the country (which controlled the space program) did the unthinkable: they declared that they were abandoning the corrupted France and rebuilding the glorious France of the revolution and Napoleon on distant Mars. A mass exodus followed with the three colony-rockets being launched, made possible by the sacrifice of the French 3rd army. The new "Republic of France" and President Montblanc intend to stay true to what they refer to as a history of democracy... And try to spread their vaunted democracy wherever they can.

Colour: any manner of blue. I'm not too picky.

Annexing 254, 243, and 257 (2+3+3=8, 2 gold left over.)
Now have: 2 gold, 1 army, 8 territories, 1 gold.

As a means of stabilizing its economy, The Garden of Eden is offering to loan its armies to any paying nations. The cost shall be two gold per turn for one army and three gold for both.

You could not find better soldiers anywhere else.

President Jean Montblanc read the report from his recon troops, and frowned. He looked up at the militia soldier, whose lack of professionalism was evidenced by his relaxed stance and perhaps more obviously by his makeshift equipment.

"We've landed in the middle of fascists and communists?"

The much younger frenchman tore his gaze from the Mona Lisa hanging in the President's office. "Uh. Y-yes, sir. Apparently they beat us to the punch."

Montblanc pinched the bridge of his nose. "I didn't ask for your opinion, lieutenant. You are dismissed."

The militiaman saluted smartly and left. Montblanc leaned back in his chair and turned around to admire the view. The red planet was anything but red since the terraforming.

The scenery was only a small comfort though. He'd ran an intensive propaganda campaign exalting the republic government and the futility of authoritarian regimes. Hell, they'd kept the Marseillaise, an anthem that quite specifically mentioned killing tyrants. Now he had to make nice with his country's boogeymen or face war just as his country was in its infancy.

Montblanc sighed, and switched the intercom on. "Get Marcel in here."

The president smirked to himself. Completely contradicting his earlier campaign couldn't be TOO hard, could it?

New Nation: The Grand Caliphate of New Kaaba
Capitol: Territory 229
Other Territories: 225-228
Fluff
Fearing assassination by greedy cousins Saud bin Abdul Aziz was whisked away and placed in charge of a growing colony.

Mars was seen as new home, ordained by Allah to be paradise in which the old colonial powers would not hold sway over the faithful. Landing near the north of the eastern lands they expanded southward till striking gold and finding a granite stone that matched the Kaaba exactly. Taking this as a sign from Allah, Abdul declared it a message from god and ordered the construction of a mighty city.

On one morning during the Salah the transmission from Mecca ceased never to be resumed. The destruction was called the will of god and and Abdul was ordained Caliphate.

Exert from coronation speech.
"...the will of Allah was ignored on earth, they fell to sin and venerated the body and mind of man instead of the Almighty. We find ourselves at the edge of redemption, clearly Allah has given us this new Eden and ask only that we have the will to turn the savages and heathens from their wicked ways and to the path of god. I have seen into the eyes of my countrymen and brothers and know we have the will but the path will be..."

Armies
Mubarizun: The massed infantry of countless brothers of the caliphate. Either joining willing or pressed into service they are the sandstorm that will swallow all.
Rashidun: Quick response cavalry and tank battalions.

Turn one
The caliphate has declared the lands to the south(231) and north west(226) open to colonization. A second army is to be raised made from the sons of nobles and merchants, they are to be armed with the finest mounts, arms, and tanks. They shall be known as the Rashidun and they will strike like lightning in the night.

The Grand Caliph of New Kaaba accepts your diplomat on the condition he and his staff remain within your consulate and not mingle with the subjects of The Grand Caliphate of New Kaaba, alcohol can not be imported/distilled/consumed within the consulate, and non Islamic religious material must never leave the consulate or be seen within in public rooms.

The Republic receives the Irish diplomats warmly, bonding over their shared disdain for the English. President Montblanc wishes the Fenians the utmost of luck in securing the northern peninsula.

French envoys are sent north to the Caliphate, specifically chosen for open-mindedness and understanding of Islam. With the Republic being highly secular and in many cases atheist combined with the uncomfortable French history as a colonial power in the middle east and North Africa, President Montblanc's public address states that the French are keen on being on good terms with their new neighbours to the north.

Of course we respect others so long as they do not impose their views on us. The Brotherhood will be interested in seeing how things develop between our two great nations.

French radio broadcasts constant news regarding diplomatic updates.

Although the Irish diplomats in New Versaille are well received and various trade deals are established, a military defensive pact is something the French are reluctant to enter. Put simply, they fear such an alliance would draw France in to north peninsular politics at no personal gain, due to the substantial distance between the two powers.

Talks have begun with the Chinese, but there has been little else reported on that.
